Autumn means one thing to me; wearing brand new coats that make me feel like kicking leaves on the way to work and praying that there isn’t a hedgehog or dog shit underneath. Incidentally, you’ve not lived until you’ve sent a dog shit spinning through the air at half seven in the morning. Year after year, autumnal shades get dragged out of wardrobes, threadbare and tired.
But there are some really relevant and trendy coats out there that can be a great addition to your existing wardrobe, and I’ve pulled together 5 that are under £90 and available on the high street.
This quilted jacket, from Zara, is a perfect addition to your casual wardrobe. You can team it with other autumnal coloured chinos like berry and burgundy, or wear is straight with a pair of slim leg jeans and some chelsea boots.
My personal favourite, this utilitarian jacket might look bulky and make you bigger than you are, but if you wear it with some plain dyed denim and an accompanying sued boot, it’ll be a look that sees you through from now until early Spring. Playing with textures can work just as effectively as playing with colours.
Sometimes, because of my short legs, I can’t pull off longer length clothes (the longer length trend is completely lost on me), and I long for coats that are cropped in length, or single breasted. This peacoat from River Island, although not single breasted, is just the right length to cover my bum and look relatively normal.
A camel covered overcoat from Topman has long been an essential staple in a woman’s tailoring wardrobe, and now, its worked it’s way over to us. Worn over a suit (try an adventurous texture like tweed or a formal check), or with an open Oxford shirt and minimalist trainers for an updated take on a smart casual look, an overcoat is going to be an amazing addition to your wardrobe for months to come.
Finally, the most ontrend coat on the list. The sports luxe shape, the fabric choice, its flexibility when layered with a variety of different textures, this bomber jacket, from Zara, can be worn smart with a fancy button down, navy chinos and brogues , or more casually with a dark brown pullover, skinny jeans and suede trainers, this is so versatile.
